I see a lot of people with a diagnosis of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) or mild functional gut symptoms and we work out a personalised digestive health plan.

The low fermentable carbohydrate plan (low FODMAP) is a scientifically proven intervention shown to help 3 out of 4 suffers with IBS. It can really help if you cut down on certain carbohydrate foods that aren’t well absorbed in the first part of the gut and get fermented in the lower gut. The fermentation can cause bowel symptoms in those with a sensitive gut. But some of those foods ‘feed’ your good gut bacteria and you don’t want to avoid them long term. There are some useful apps and books that help with the initial phase but reintroducing foods back into your diet is important. In your personalised digestive health plan we’ll also talk about probiotics and other supplements to see if they may help reduce your symptoms. Feeling anxious can worsen gut symptoms so reviewing stress in your life is part of your personalised digestive health plan. Some people find reviewing food, mood and symptoms together can help them see those links. Some exercise and other therapies like hypnotherapy can be helpful in IBS so we’ll discuss that as part of your personalised plan.
